Charity Partnership
FAIR is proud to have accepted an invitation to become a charity partner of a national project to set up translational research centres in partnership with LifeArc.
This includes a project, led by Dr Louise Oni who has previously been awarded FAIR funding. Dr Oni will lead the LifeArc-Kidney Research UK Centre for Rare Kidney Diseases to transform rare kidney disease advances across the UK. This new research centre will enable thousands of people living with rare kidney diseases to gain access to improved diagnostics, treatments and potentially cures.
FAIR will support the strategic oversight of the transformative project which benefits from the support of other charity partners Beacon and Genetic Alliance UK. FAIR will be representing the community with regards to autoimmune rare diseases.
Sailing Fun Day
Largs Sailing Club raised funds for FAIR at their Charity Fun Day with dinghy racing, games and a BBQ.
Four Nations' Swim
Initiated by Fiona Murdoch, a 3K open water swim took place for FAIR on 31 August in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Team England: Claire Talbot and Amy Talbot swam at Tooting Lido, London.
Team Scotland: Fiona Murdoch, Carol Alderson, Sarah Green, Bill Crooks, Lynne MacDonald, Linda Andrews and Nicola Law (with paddle board support from Alistair McLaughlin), swam at Largs Bay Beach, Strathclyde.
Team Wales: Ruth Longfellow and Isaac Melia swam at Hanmer Mere, Wrexham
Team Northern Ireland: Sue Moore and Alex Bould swam at Helen’s Bay Beach, Belfast Lough.

Alder Hey Research Presentation
Alder Hey is an established UK leader in paediatric research. On 29 August, the trustees of FAIR had the privilege of visiting its Clinical Research Facility and Research Laboratories. Presentations on projects FAIR has helped to support were given by Professor Christian Hedrich, Dr Claire Pain, Dr Chloe Williams, Dr Ein Mitford Davies, Dr Amandine Charras, Dr Andrew Chetwynd, Hannah Ging and Francesca Sposito.

Skydive Strathallan
On 23 August, friends and family of Finlay Herrington will Skydive from Strathallan Airfield, the oldest and largest skydiving centre in Scotland, for FAIR.

Five Ferries Cycle
Congratulations to all who took part in the Five Ferry Cycle Challenge, a circular route on Scotland’s spectacular West Coast from Ayrshire into Arran, Kintyre, Cowal and Bute. Another fabulous fundraiser organised by the Herrington family.
Sprint Races
Prestwick Sailing Club, one of the premier sailing clubs in Scotland, will host the Finlay Herrington Sprint Races during its Club Regatta Weekend. The event, intended to encourage young people to take up dinghy race sailing, was organised by the Prestwick cadets as a tribute to Finlay. Many of the cadets were coached by Finlay over recent years. Participants will compete for the Finlay Herrington Trophy. In the evening, a social event is to be held with live music by Finlay’s friends Yuri Joyce and Rory Healy. Coast to Coast Cycle
Congratulations to Rob Ashbrook, Rob Surman and Adam Smith who cycled the Coast to Coast route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, a journey of 140 miles, for FAIR!
London Marathon 2024
Nick Shellock of the London Fire Brigade ran the London Marathon as a tribute to his mother who was diagnosed with Susac’s syndrome, a rare autoimmune condition, some years ago.
He is the first person to run the London Marathon for FAIR and he comfortably beat his fundraising target. Congratulations Nick.
London Landmarks Half Marathon 2024
Another fabulous day at the LLHM. Our 14 runners donned FAIR shirts and set off with almost 19,000 others on the 13.1 mile (21km) course passing landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Courts of Justice.
A spectacular performance from Ben Leaman who won the men’s race with a breathtaking time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 2 seconds.
Thank you to our runners: Rob Ashbrook, Maddie Ashbrook, Lucy Bell, Gary Billington, Theo Bould, Kate Cleary, Matt Cleary, Dan Grinnall, Ben Leaman, Connor Lee, Robyn Rafferty, Tom Rafferty, Jill Sankey and James Shaw, together raising more than £7,000 for FAIR.
Post run celebrations continued long into the night!

Hickstead
We are delighted that Chloe Breen chose to donate to FAIR the proceeds of a raffle held at the Breen Equestrian Stud Open Day and Spring Auction 2023. Chloe, a former winner of the Hickstead Speed Derby, is involved in the running of Hickstead Show Jumping and Breen Equestrian. We are grateful for her support.

F.A.I.R. carol service
Another joyful evening of carols at Christ Church, Chelsea. We were joined by distinguished readers including Petroc Trelawny, Angela Thorne, Geraldine Somerville and Douglas Reith and by Dr Jim Down, consultant in critical care and anaesthesia at University College London Hospital, who has written about his experiences as an ICU doctor during the pandemic in his book, ‘Life Support: diary of an ICU doctor on the frontline of the Covid crisis’.
The Moreton Hall Chamber choir, conducted by Director of Music Helen Rayner, delighted the congregation alongside soloists Tim Wonnacott and Ellie Diack. The evening was filmed by members of the Radley College Film Crew.
