Emily, Cheryl and Stephanie were prompted to support research into auto immune diseases because both of their parents suffered from rare auto immune illnesses. Their mother had cancer, but she also had Paraneoplastic syndrome which had affected her nervous system to a catastrophic point. The symptoms of the syndrome presented many months before the cancer was discovered and by then her mobility had already been greatly reduced. This syndrome is exceptionally rare and is an autoimmune response within the body. Their late father, Grant, also suffered for many years from Palindromic Rheumatism which is a rare auto immune form of arthritis.
