The Research We Fund

Unfashionable and underfunded, research into autoimmune illnesses has often been overlooked. Autoimmune illnesses are among the most complex  to diagnose and to treat. With so much ground to make up and with so many affected, we feel it’s time autoimmune research is  funded properly. Learn more about the projects we have funded.

F.A.I.R Events

Candlelit carols with readings by stars of stage and screen; elegant dinners; ferret racing; rowing events; garden parties and marathons – we have big aspirations and believe that fundraising should be rewarding and fun. Learn more about our past and upcoming events here.

Grainne Dennison

Chair & Founder

I was working in London when I suffered my first attack of Nephrotic Syndrome. Having been treated for a number of years with Steroids and Immune Suppressants, with variable success, I was eventually treated with an unlicensed form of chemotherapy. Three years ago I decided to found F.A.I.R in order to try to help others suffering from similar auto-immune disorders.

Dr Gavin Cleary

Trustee

I am a consultant paediatric rheumatologist at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, having been in post since 2003. I care for children and young people with a wide spectrum of inflammatory and non-inflammatory rheumatological conditions. I have an active interest in research and am currently principal investigator of multiple clinical trials. I am co-leading a national project to create a digital data collection tool for all the children’s hospitals in the UK to use which we hope will improve the quality of care delivered to children and young people with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Alexandra Bould

Trustee

I am a family law barrister with a mixed practice including matrimonial finance and cases involving children suffering from chronic illness, terminal illness and mental health difficulties.  At the age of 10, my daughter was diagnosed with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease.  I am aware of the far-reaching impact auto-immune diseases can have on the lives of children and adults alike and am keen to try to support those working in this important field of research.

John Melia

Treasurer

Before re-qualifying as a barrister, I was a partner in Hong Kong and Isle of Man offices of Appleby, and a partner in the Hong Kong office of Richards Butler (now Reed Smith Richards Butler), where my practice consisted predominantly of mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments and capital markets transactions.  I also worked on restructurings, joint ventures and debt transactions, and advised on regulatory issues for insurers and mutual funds.  I am qualified as a lawyer in England and Wales, Hong Kong, the Isle of Man and the British Virgin Islands.
